Fifteen years later, while reading a magazine on a Singapore Airline flight to Kuala Lumpur, I ran across an article about the history of Sarawak during the Second World War.

In 1942, the article ran, the Japanese secured the island, the fifth largest on earth. A year later, owing to their harsh treatment of natives, the Japanese started losing significant numbers to native Iban sharpshooters. The situation confounded the Asian invaders, who were unaware that shortly after their invasion, Australian paratroopers had penetrated the jungled interior, hooked up with various nomadic tribes, and trained a handful of young males as snipers. By war’s end, the article stated, many of these native riflemen had become “remarkable, if improbable, marksmen.”
